Abstract Japanese scholars have studied the Hakkas, one of the Chinese ethnic groups, since the end of the 19th century. A considerable amount of literature, in particular, from the historical and anthropological studies, has been published, but not yet been reviewed systematically. This article therefore is an attempt to represent and analyze the Japanese literature of the Hakka studies over the past century. It focuses mainly on the historical and anthropological literatures, including the ethnological studies, the research about the Hakka origins, field studies of Hakka cultures, and the post-structuralism studies since the 1990s.
