Abstract Marking the southernmost boundary of Taiwan's Hakka immigrant settlements, Jiadong Township was geographically delineated as Left Dui (dui: an administrative division in Hakka communities, originally referring to “troop” and later to “settlement”) of the Liudui (six duis) area in Kaohsiung and Pingtung. The population of Jiadong is made up of half Hakka and half Minnan. Since Hakka people in the past valued agricultural cultivation and academic studies for clan prosperity, many people left their hometowns for further studies in search of opportunities to gain fame and fortune. Moreover, as Taiwan's agrarian economy gradually shifted to an industrial economy starting from 1967, the economic development that guaranteed newly-created jobs attracted the younger generation. The triggered population outflow caused the problem of aging villages. However, due to being less affected by social changes, the villages retained their traditional agricultural lifestyle. Thus, in addition to several county-designated historic sites, such as Hsiao Family Residence, Yang Clan Shrine and West Fence Gate, other historic sites, including the Luo's, Tseng's and Lin's Huofang (traditional Hakka house) were all well preserved, so Jiadong is praised as being home to historic sites in Pingtung County. Part of Yang Clan Shrine was harmed by the roadway development in 1995; this caused a wave of historic preservation. A knock-on effect of protection of Jiadong's historic sites and community revitalization then followed, thereby raising the old Liugen villagers' cultural awareness of historic site protection. This trend contributed to the reconstruction of the Yang Clan Shrine, the preservation of Zhang Family Business Building via fundraising, and the establishment of Liudui Poet Path, greatly transforming the traditional settlements into close-knit Hakka culture-rich villages.
